The Pen & Wig is situated near the bottom of Stow Hill, within easy walking distance of the city centre bus and train stations, and the landmark Westgate Hotel stands opposite this pub. There has been a building on this site since at least 1610 as one is marked on the John Speed map from that time.

The two buildings which make up the present pub have had a number of uses including a dress shop and register office. The 1980s saw the buildings changed into The Georgian restaurant and in 1995 it opened as the Pen & Wig public house, the name a reference to the nearby solicitors’ offices.

The black and white facade is unmistakable and the pub is reached by a short walk uphill from Westgate Square. The side-entrance door leads to a split-level, multi-roomed interior. The bar features six gleaming handpumps for real ales with Bass, Doombar, Double Dragon and Kite being the permanent beers, with two rotating local guest beers. It is the only pub in Newport Town Centre in Camra’s Good Beer Guide.

The Pen & Wig was purchased by company in October 2013 and refurbished throughout keeping the traditional theme intact.

The pub has an open kitchen specializing in grills. Food is served all day and the Sunday Carvery is a huge draw. The nightclub upstairs has three rooms including bar, lounge area and disco/stage plus giant screen and 3 flat screens for all sporting events inc SKY/BT. It is available for free hire..

The Pen & Wig has a great outside area at the rear, which in the summer is a real suntrap as it faces west.

There are regular beer festivals and live jazz on Sunday evenings.
